metering and accreditation

An Ofgem-approved meter is required for export trading above 30kW. An additional Ofgem-accredited total generation meter is required for claiming ROCs, or the Feed-in Tariff for FiT sites, if you will also be using any of the electricity on site.

half-hourly and non half-hourly metering

Half-hourly metering is normally economical for generators above 50kW, but can also be used for smaller sites. A Meter Operator is required to install and maintain appropriate metering under a services contract, for an annual fee. You have a choice of Meter Operators.

An appropriate meter may already exist if your site is a user over 100kW. This kind of metering is read remotely via a telecoms line.

Non half-hourly metering for microgeneration is provided free by your DNO, and is read manually.

Once your generator has the appropriate metering and is connected to the grid, a unique export MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is allocated by the DNO.  When your generator has the appropriate metering installed and is connected to the grid, you are ready for trading.

accreditation from Ofgem

In order to get the full financial benefits of renewable or CHP generation you must be accredited for ROCs, LECs, and REGOs according to your site's eligibility. Accreditation is awarded by Ofgem.
