Energy Power Resources case study

Energy Power Resources’ (EPR) Westfield facility has played a pioneering role in the development of the UK’s biomass industry.
As well as being Scotland’s first biomass generator, the plant was also the first poultry litter site in the world to use an advanced combustion technology to reduce emissions. Farms across Scotland supply Westfield with more than 100,000 tonnes of litter a year and trials have also taken place with fuels including poppy straw and oat husks.
As well as proving highly effective, the fluidised bed combustion system used also produces an ash which is rich in phosphates and potassium and sold as a high quality agricultural fertiliser.
EPR’s Chief Executive Eddie Wilkinson said a keen price was the primary reason for the decision to switch the plant to a SmartestEnergy contract in 2009.
“We also found the process of working with SmartestEnergy a very slick one. The price agreed was stuck to as negotiations were finalised and the deal was done quickly.
“We were also able to fix the Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC) price which is important in giving us good visibility of revenues in the future.”
The Westfield site is an established part of EPR’s portfolio of five plants which is now one of the largest and most diverse in the UK. The company is currently planning a sixth plant to burn waste wood at Thetford, in Norfolk.
