Claire Perry, the former Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, has joined the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as a junior minister during Prime Minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle.

Nick Hurd, who was previously the Climate Change & Industry Minister, has left BEIS to become the new Home Office Minister.

Hurd was responsible for the carbon budgets, international climate change, green economy, energy efficiency and heat at BEIS.

Greg Clark has retained his role as Business & Energy Secretary.

Gove like ‘fox in chicken coop’

Meanwhile, Michael Gove has returned to the front bench as Environment Secretary, replacing Andrea Leadsom, who becomes Leader of the House of Commons.

Sir Ed Davey, who served as Energy Secretary while Gove was Education Secretary in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, told.

Utility Week that putting Gove in charge of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs was like “putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop”.

“This is the guy who wanted to take climate change out of the geography curriculum,” Davey claimed.
