Strengthening the UK's renewable energy supply with Blackfinch Energy
Our partnership with Blackfinch Energy supports continued investment in renewable energy projects, paving the way for a faster transition to clean energy.
Blackfinch Energy’s renewable portfolio
Sustainable infrastructure investor, Blackfinch Energy, have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to a net zero future through a PPA partnership with SmartestEnergy. Over several years, SmartestEnergy has provided Blackfinch with a secure and reliable route to market for its portfolio of onshore wind and solar PV assets, with now 20 assets signed under a PPA.
With a shared vision to strengthen the UK’s renewable energy supply and empower a greener generation, we're proud to partner with a forward-thinking investor like Blackfinch.
With a portfolio of projects spread across the UK, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Blackfinch produce around 200GWh of clean energy every year, and through our PCG-backed PPA contracts, we serve as a creditworthy, bankable partner, offering a stable and reliable route to market for their investments.
Through our Framework PPA product, Blackfinch benefits from a balance of stability and flexibility, enabling them to strategically schedule price-setting opportunities within a simple framework structure. This approach allows Blackfinch to take advantage of market movements and optimise their assets' revenues while maintaining simplicity and control.
As a signatory to the PRI, Blackfinch puts responsible investing at the heart of it's decision making. Across its investment teams, this means carefully considering thier impact on society while continuing to grow its portfolio and deliver long‑term value for investors.
To support this ambition, Blackfinch relies on SmartestEnergy to secure strong, reliable revenues for the electricity generated across its sites. Backed by Marubeni, SmartestEnergy provides a credible, bankable route to market, delivering price certainty and a trusted partnership that Blackfinch can depend on.
In 2023, we expanded our successful ongoing partnership with the signing of two new PPA for new solar projects: the 8.9MW Bryngolwg solar farm in Wales and the 24MW Horsey Levels solar farm in Somerset.
Energised in April 2024, the Horsey Levels solar farm was the first project made operational under the National Grid's acceleration scheme. The National Energy System Operator's Technical Limits Programme was rolled out to streamline the integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
We were proud to visit the site on the day of it's energisation and to have provided a route to market for the first site under this innovative scheme, marking a significant step towards a cleaner energy future.
Power Purchase Agreements are an important part of our strategy to create value for retail investors. Investing into energy infrastructure takes careful management of risk around energy pricing, to understand the impact on investor portfolios both now and in the future.
