10 February 2026 – SmartestEnergy, the company helping businesses and independent generators navigate the energy transition, has made significant progress with the expansion of its trading operations into the European market.
SmartestEnergy has been a leading participant in the UK energy market for more than 20 years, providing trading, route-to-market and optimisation services across power, gas and battery energy storage system (BESS) assets. The business structures Purchase Power Agreements (PPAs), floors, tolls and profit sharing for BESS, peaking plants and flexible assets, alongside a range of bespoke trading products, including shapes, spreads and indexation. This is all underpinned by the company’s deep market expertise and a strong, client-led approach.
Building on this foundation, SmartestEnergy is now expanding into Europe, starting with Germany as one of Europe’s most liquid and strategically important energy markets. The move into Germany signals SmartestEnergy’s commitment to offering innovative energy solutions and origination capabilities across borders, supporting customers and generators as the continent accelerates its transition to cleaner, smarter energy.
This is part of the company’s ambition to become a leading European energy partner alongside its established UK, US and Australian operations. Backed by its renewable and trading experience and supported by the global scale of its Fortune 500 parent company, Marubeni, the business has already started trading German power and gas products on the European Energy Exchange. SmartestEnergy currently provides market access across all German transmission system operators – 50Hertz, Amprion, TransnetBW and TenneT – and its wider European offering will expand from here.
Mahul Raval, Senior Vice President Trading, SmartestEnergy said: “Our aim is to make SmartestEnergy the partner of choice for wholesale counterparties, while also supporting organisations in achieving their sustainability goals through facilitating access to renewable energy sources and structuring innovative solutions. Making origination a central part of our leadership team strengthens our global strategy for origination-led growth. By elevating origination into the leadership team, we can move faster on complex transactions, deepen partnerships across Europe, and launch new products.”
Christina Forsingdal, VP of Origination, SmartestEnergy said: “I’m excited to help continue building the Origination team at SmartestEnergy at a time of critical growth for the business globally. The company has a highly experienced trading team, a clear purpose and ambitious expansion plans. My priority is to make origination a visible, value-creating function, working with clients to structure reliable, bankable energy solutions that enable new asset development, provide generators with greater revenue certainty and give customers practical solutions as they navigate the energy transition across multiple markets.”
SmartestEnergy is a member of the European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET) and has been trading in wholesale energy markets since it was established in 2000. It has extensive experience in structuring PPAs and renewable energy deals, having successfully supported businesses across the UK, US and Australia with bespoke solutions for renewable generation and flexible assets.
