Energy productivity improvements can dramatically reduce reliance on fossil fuels, according to a new report.

The Energy Transitions Commission said electrification of road transport and building together with more efficient appliances will help improve energy productivity which is a measure of economic output generated per unit of energy.

The report sees the opportunity for the world to more than double global GDP by 2050, while reducing final energy demand by 24%.

However, it said governments, businesses and consumers must seize the chance to massively improve energy productivity by replacing inefficient fossil systems with far more efficient electric ones.

“If governments act now to introduce supportive policy, global prosperity can double by mid-century while using less energy overall.” said Adair Turner, chair of the commission.
