The Government has set out its strategy on the future of electricity interconnection between Great Britain and overseas countries.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said it was the first step in an ongoing programme of work that will evolve alongside work to plan the future energy system being carried out by NESO and Ofgem.
The Government said by enabling the cross-border flow of electricity, interconnectors enable power to be imported when it is cheaper abroad and export surplus power when the country generating more than it uses.
“They also enhance our energy security, support decarbonisation and provide flexibility for the electricity system. This flexibility is essential for integrating the new home-grown renewable power we are building to reduce our reliance on expensive and volatile fossil fuel markets,” it said.
It said it expects to further grow the interconnector fleet with additional projects that support the development of a Net Zero energy system in the years ahead.
