A new flexibility service is being launched to match local demand with periods of high renewable generation export.
National Grid’s Distribution System Operator (DSO) said the Demand Turn Up service, FlexUp, will enable faster integration of smaller generation and storage schemes under 5MW by reducing export constraints and enhancing network stability,
The new service is being launched as part of what the DSO said was its most ambitious long-term flexibility tender to date.
The tender now covers a record 96 High Voltage zones and 1,144 Low Voltage zones, reaching more than 4.5 million customers.
Cathy McClay, Managing Director at National Grid DSO, said it was a “landmark moment” for flexibility markets.
“We’re also expanding opportunities for providers, making it easier to participate and helping communities benefit from cleaner, smarter energy.”
