The energy industry needs to address its cyber security priorities more urgently amid growing threat levels, according to a new report.
Consultancy Bridewell said given the critical role the sector plays in the UK’s national security and economy, organisations are “constantly in the sights of cyber criminals and nation-state-backed hacking groups”.
The report also pointed out the electricity industry in particular is entering a period of rapid change, set to grow significantly in line with net zero ambitions.
“As the sector becomes increasingly digitalised, each asset relies more heavily on operational technology and data connectivity. Yet, as is increasingly recognised, many energy companies still use distinctly legacy systems,” said the report.
“With digitalisation accelerating and infrastructure investment ramping up, it’s vital the energy sector takes a fresh look at its cyber security posture.”
