Our renewable fuels solutions
Secure long-term value from your renewable gas production or consumption. SmartestEnergy’s Gas Purchase Agreements (GPAs) combine the physical delivery of biomethane with Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGO) certificates, offering a fully traceable and sustainable green gas solution.
Gas Purchase Agreements (GPAs)
SmartestEnergy's GPA combines physical gas (Biomethane) with Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin certificates (RGGOs) certifying renewable credentials of the gas molecules.
Get in touchWhat do you get?
- Physical Gas delivered at the Gas hub
- RGGO certificates from Biomethane registry
- PoS or Proof of Sustainability certifying carbon intensity savings
- Potential savings against EU ETS
Who’s it for?
Corporates, Energy Suppliers, Industries
For Corporates and Industries | Corporates and Industries can purchase GPAs to meet its short and longer-term green energy security while reducing carbon intensity of its operations. |
For Energy Suppliers | Energy suppliers can purchase GPAs to deliver renewable natural gas to its customers, while saving against Green Gas levy and other national mandates. |
For Biomethane Producers |
GPAs help producers with:

Biogas / Biomethane Certificates (RGGOs)
SmartestEnergy trades verified biogas/biomethane certificates providing proof of origin and emission reductions.
Get in touchWhat certificates do we trade?
Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGO) certificates verify the renewable origin of biomethane injected into the gas grid. Each certificate represents one unit of biomethane and ensures transparency and reliability in tracking green credentials.
- Waste, Crop and/or Manure feedstocks derived
- Certified with additional document i.e. proof of Sustainability or Uncertified.
- From a Subsidised or an unsubsidised plant
Who are they for?
Taking Climate action against harder to abate emissions derived from combustion of gas for e.g. Onsite boiler. Potential savings against EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and meeting other voluntary standards.
For corporates |
Corporates and industries purchase RGGOs to achieve verifiable savings in the carbon intensity of their operations, supporting decarbonisation goals and net-zero commitments. |
For suppliers |
RGGOs allow suppliers to secure a steady, verifiable supply of Green Gas for their customers, enabling them to offer premium renewable gas products and meet growing demand for sustainable energy. |
For producers |
Producers gain steady and optimised revenue streams by monetising the environmental value of their biomethane, enhancing the financial viability of their projects. |

Frequently asked questions
What are renewable fuels and how is it produced?
Renewable fuels are derived from organic sources such as waste, crops, and manure. They are processed to create biogas and biomethane, which can be used for heating, transport, and electricity generation.
How can you help flexible generation?
They reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
What are RGGO Certificates?
Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates verify the source and sustainability of biomethane injected into the gas grid.
What is the difference between biogas and biomethane?
Biogas used to generate electricity is a combination of methane, CO2 and other gaseous substances obtained from the controlled decomposition of organic matter.
On the other hand, Biomethane used for heating, transport is a compound identical to the natural fossil gas that runs through national grids.
Biomethane is virtually carbon neutral.
Biomethane and biogas are often categorised as “green gas” that includes other renewable fuels of non-biological origin such as green hydrogen and synthetic gas.
What is the difference between Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG?
Both are biomethane used as a transport fuel, but they differ in state and density:
- Bio-CNG (Compressed Natural Gas): Biomethane compressed at high pressure. It is generally easier to refuel but has a lower energy density, making it better suited for regional transport.
See Bio-CNG and Bio-LNG: Sustainable alternatives for heavy goods transport.
- Bio-LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas): Biomethane cooled to −161∘C to turn it into a liquid. This process results in a much higher energy density, meaning more energy can be stored in the same volume. It is therefore preferred for long-haul and maritime shipping.

What is an RTFC?
RTFC stands for Renewable Transport Fuel Certificate.
- Purpose: They are certificates issued under the UK's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme for every litre (or equivalent energy) of sustainable renewable fuel supplied for transport use.
- Use: Fuel suppliers must acquire and redeem a certain number of RTFCs to demonstrate that a percentage of the fuel they supply comes from renewable sources, or pay a buy-out price. Producers of renewable fuels generate and sell these certificates.
