The energy sector is driving the transition to net-zero and with ambitious targets set out in National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios – we see it as our responsibility to lead the way by empowering businesses to start their net-zero journey by procuring 100% renewable electricity supply.

Fast-track to Net-Zero

Procuring 100% renewable electricity is the most effective way to start your net-zero journey. Leading corporates are already delivering against their net-zero targets and they expect the same from their supply chain.

Our 100% renewable electricity products offer unrivalled transparency. Independently certified by the Carbon Trust to confirm that every MWh is backed by UK-recognised renewable origin certificates and we aim to source these certificates from small renewable generation projects.

This means you can confidently report zero carbon emissions using the market based method in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 2 Guidance and actively support the growth of independent renewables on the grid.

With our experience supporting sustainability-minded companies – committed to 100% renewable power procurement – we are in a position to support customers who are setting net-zero targets, as well as those making a switch to renewables as a first step, or those signing up for their first contract with us.

What’s involved in the certification process?

The Carbon Trust independently certify our renewable products, which means that you don’t have to take our word for it that we’re doing the right thing.

Annually, the Carbon Trust assure that our supply products and their related fuel mixes comply with the quality criteria required by the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. Their label is designed to give customers the confidence to report zero emissions for purchased electricity using the market-based method.

A key part of the Carbon Trust certification process includes the regular monitoring of our renewable certificates and their allocation, ensuring we have enough certificates to match every renewable megawatt hour we supply. Further, guaranteeing our customers’ certificate-backed renewable electricity for the length of their contract.

Carbon Trust assurance

The Carbon Trust has made the following statement about their certification of our renewable electricity product:

“Carbon Trust has assured that all of SmartestEnergy’s electricity products defined as ‘renewable’ are 100% backed by renewable certificates. The generation sources claimed for each renewable product are backed by renewable certificates of the corresponding technology.

The emission factors associated with all of SmartestEnergy’s products (conventional and renewable) are reported in accordance with the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. SmartestEnergy has embedded policies and procedures, which relate to the data collection, monitoring, reporting and checking, to achieve these ends.”

Our commitment to you:

We commit to supply credible renewable electricity products and ensure that we are transparent in what we offer and report on. This is evidenced by the following:

Energy labels – we will produce annual energy labels for our renewable customers. These are designed to be a true reflection of the electricity we supply and we hope customers will incorporate these within their reporting and display them in relevant sites and offices as a demonstration of their renewables commitment:

Fuel mix – we will always display our latest certified fuel mix on our website. This is updated annually in September and includes the sources of electricity within each product that we sell and the associated carbon emissions and radioactive waste (where appropriate) for the previous financial year reporting period. As an example, in our most recent review (2019/20), the breakdown of electricity sources for our 100% Natural Renewable Product were:

  • Wind - 23.8%

  • Solar PV - 36.3%

  • Hydro - 40%

Renewable products – we believe our range of renewable products enable out customers to achieve their renewable ambitions, but are always willing to discuss how we can expand out service to support customers. We are proud to offer these three key renewables options:

  • Natural Renewable - 100 % renewable electricity generated solely by the wind, sun or water

  • Standard Renewable - 100% renewable electricity from a blend of generation sources

  • Specific Renewable - a bespoke product which allows you to choose your preferred source of 100% renewable electricity
