The Energy Services Transforming the UK’s Digital Energy Landscape
Blog

In the first scoping of the UK’s Digital Energy Landscape, Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) has identified 184 innovative energy companies who are lowering energy costs, adopting renewable energy and revolutionising the future of energy in the UK.

In this guest post on behalf of the ESC, Charles Morley takes a closer look at some of these companies and what they bring to the energy sector.

Electric Cars

Car sharing service Zip car recently partnered with Volkswagen in order to include hundreds of electric cars to their service. This contributes to their goal of being completely electric by 2025. Their business model encourages only using a car when you need it, which creates the potential for there to be fewer cars on the road, helping to reduce the overall emissions associated with transport.

Similarly, Co Wheels Car Club provides pay-as-you-go hybrid and electric cars to organisations and communities across the UK. By renting cars whenever you need them, the company aims to make cleaner transport more widely accessible.

Energy Price Comparison Services

Flipper helps customers achieve lower energy bills by automatically switching them to the cheapest energy option. By paying an annual fee, customers then have the market scanned for them by Flipper each month, who then switch them automatically if there is a better deal available for them. There’s plenty of choice too, as consumers can opt for environmentally friendly energy providers only through an intelligent algorithm,

Migrate takes the focus on social enterprise one step further and encourages consumers to switch to green energy suppliers by donating £10 for every switch to local causes, as well as tackling fuel poverty across the UK.

Commercial Aggregators

At Origami the goal is make energy systems more efficient, sustainable and reliable through innovative technology solutions. This technology allows energy companies to control, optimise, store and generate power, both automatically and in real-time.

There are three main products: Origami Connect, which allows you to connect with anything that stores, generates or consumes power, Origami Control, providing an interface to available energy markets, and finally Origami Optimise, which aids in financially optimising large portfolios of diverse assets.

Energy Systems Catapult

Energy Systems Catapult is an independent, not-for-profit organisation which seeks to help transform the landscape of the UK’s energy system by bridging the gap between industry, government, academia and research.

If you’re working in digital energy innovation, their Innovator Support Platform can help by providing tailored incubation and acceleration support to help overcome barriers, de-risk innovation and secure investments.
