Accelerating net zero through a Corporate PPA
A Corporate PPA, or CPPA, is a long-term agreement between a business and a renewable generator for the purchase of electricity from a specific renewable asset. We work with organisations on both sides of these agreements, supplying power to commercial and industrial customers and acting as route to market for hundreds of independent renewable generators.

Get in touchWhat's a Corporate PPA?
A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) is a long-term agreement between a large business and a renewable generator for the purchase of electricity from a specific renewable asset. By signing a contract over several years at an agreed price, both parties gain greater visibility over future energy costs and revenues.
The associated Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) can be transferred alongside the power, enabling businesses to link their electricity procurement to a named renewable generator. For organisations looking to strengthen their connection to renewable energy, a CPPA offers greater traceability than a standard supply contract.
By providing generators with longer-term revenue certainty, CPPAs can also support investment in renewable energy projects, while helping businesses build greater certainty into their energy procurement strategy.
How does a Corporate PPA work?
Every agreement is negotiated, but the process follows the same four stages.
- Matching: We identify a generator and a buyer whose volumes, technology, location and contract term fit together. With a large portfolio of C&I businesses and renewable generators, we have the experience and extensive network to match you to the right partner.
- Structuring and pricing: You agree the commercial shape of the deal, whether that is a fixed price, a floor or a collar, and whether the power is delivered physically or settled financially. Your price is then set for the term of the agreement.
- Sleeving and supply: We manage the wholesale interface, shaping the generator's output against the buyer's demand and covering the balancing and imbalance risk that sits between them. We settle both parties, so buyers keep a single supply arrangement and generators keep a single offtaker.
- Reporting: REGOs are transferred and retired against the buyer's consumption, providing auditable evidence for sustainability reporting and net zero disclosure.
What types of Corporate PPA are there?
The term covers several structures. Which one suits you depends on how much of the physical delivery you want to take on.
Sleeved (physical) CPPA
Power is delivered physically to the buyer through a supplier, who sleeves the generation into the buyer's supply and covers the difference between what the asset generates and what the site uses. This is the most common structure for UK buyers who want to keep a single supply relationship.
Virtual (financial) CPPA
Also known as a VPPA or a financial PPA. The two parties settle the difference between the agreed strike price and the market price, and the buyer continues to be supplied as normal. It suits businesses with sites across several regions or countries, where physical delivery from a single asset would be difficult to arrange.
Direct wire or on-site PPA
Generation is connected directly to the site it powers, without using the grid. Network costs are lower, although the asset and the demand need to be physically close together.
Corporate PPAs for businesses buying energy
Our Corporate PPAs suit organisations with significant electricity demand and a long-term commitment to renewable energy. If your business has made a public commitment on carbon, a CPPA is a way of putting a contract behind it.

Corporate PPAs for generators selling energy
Our Corporate PPAs are for generators looking for a creditworthy corporate offtaker and a revenue line they can plan around. They suit renewable assets generating more than 1 GWh a year.
Since 2000, we've been empowering the UK's energy transition, and we work with generators and large energy users every day. That means we can bring the two sides of a Corporate PPA together and manage the risk that sits between a generator's output and a buyer's demand, all under one roof.

CPPA FAQ's
What does CPPA stand for?
CPPA stands for Corporate Power Purchase Agreement. It is a long-term contract in which a business buys electricity from a renewable generator at an agreed price, facilitated by SmartestEnergy.
What's the difference between a CPPA and a PPA?
A PPA is any power purchase agreement between a generator and an offtaker. That offtaker is often a utility or trading business, such as SmartestEnergy, purchasing power to supply customers or trade in the market. A Corporate PPA is different because the buyer is a business purchasing electricity for its own use.
How does a Corporate PPA work?
A generator and a business agree a price and a contract term. Depending on the structure, the power is either delivered physically to the buyer through a supplier who manages the shaping and balancing, or the difference against the market price is settled financially. In both cases the REGOs are matched to the buyer's consumption.
How long does a Corporate PPA last?
Corporate PPAs run for considerably longer than standard supply contracts, because the length of the agreement is what makes a fixed price and a secured revenue stream possible.
What are the downsides of a Corporate PPA?
A CPPA is a long-term commitment, so it's important to consider future market conditions and changes in your energy requirements. If wholesale prices fall significantly below the agreed contract price, the agreement may become less competitive than alternative procurement options. CPPAs also come with complexities and can take longer to negotiate than a standard supply contract, typically involving credit and contractual commitments from both parties.
Is a Corporate PPA right for my business?
Corporate PPAs work best for organisations with significant and reasonably predictable electricity demand, and a genuine long-term commitment to renewable energy. They can provide greater certainty around future energy costs while strengthening an organisation's connection to renewable generation. Businesses whose primary focus is securing the lowest available price in the short term may be better served by one of our fixed or flexible supply contracts.
How large does a generation asset need to be?
We work with renewable assets generating more than 1 GWh a year. For smaller assets, our other PPA structures are usually a better route to market.
Do I get REGOs with a Corporate PPA?
Yes. The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin issued against the generation are transferred and retired against your consumption, so your renewable claim traces back to a specific asset.
