Businesses and households will be offered new incentives to increase power demand during periods of high solar and wind generation this summer.
In its latest Summer Outlook report, the National Energy System Operator said it expects to have an operational surplus.
In response it is expanding its Demand Flexibility Service, allowing households and businesses to be paid to increase electricity use during periods of excess supply,
NESO said it was confident it has the right tools and operational strategies in place to manage the electricity system this Summer.
Where necessary, it may issue a Negative Reserve Active Power Margin (NRAPM) notice, to informing the energy market it needs to be more flexible in how it produces electricity.
Dr Debs Petterson, NESO’s Director of Resilience and Emergency Management, said the outlook reflects an energy system in transition.
