Ofgem has launched a consultation looking at enabling more demand, generation and storage customers to self-build transmission connections.

The regulator said the option offers customers greater control over delivery and could lead to assets being developed quicker and cheaper.

“Our proposals aim to allow connecting customers to make an informed choice about whether to self-build and transfer,” it said.

The regulator said the proposals also aim to address concerns which have been raised about expanding the scope of self-build and transfer, setting out measures to mitigate the risk of inefficient design and build, substandard assets and greater cost to the wider consumer base.

Meanwhile Tim Jarvis has been confirmed as the regulator’s new Chief Executive after serving in the interim role since March.
