Renewable energy generated more than half of the UK’s electricity for the second year running in 2025.

New government statistics showed green energy generated a record 153TWh of power, compared with 94.9TWh from fossil fuels.

The total 52.1% renewable share was thanks to increased wind and solar capacity, higher than average wind speeds and record levels of sunshine.

Offshore wind generated a record 17.7% of the UK’s electricity and wind overall remained the largest source of renewable generation, producing 29.5% of electricity.

RenewableUK chief executive Tara Singh said: “We can build on this milestone by attracting record levels of investment in new wind and solar projects in this year’s clean energy auction which opened this month.
