Research backs overhead pylons for grid upgrade

Overhead pylons remain the cheapest option for upgrading Britain’s electricity networks, research carried out for the Government has found.
Engineering consultants Ramboll looked at newer underground cabling methods could offer a more effective way of modernising the grid. Although new methods were cheaper than traditional techniques they remain several times more expensive than overhead lines.
The government also commissioned Deloitte to look at how other countries were upgrading grid infrastructure rollout. Its report found that although switching to underground had reduced opposition to some projects, it had added significant costs and time to others.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: "We urgently need to rewire Britain's grid after decades of underinvestment to power up homes and businesses and help bring down bills for good.
"This research is more proof that the fastest, most cost effective and often most environmentally friendly way to do that is with overhead pylons.”
