The system operator is looking at a new service to procure inertia services to help with system stability.

NESO is examining a mechanism to access inertia from eligible assets capable of providing it independently of power output.

It said the service could provide an additional route to optimise inertia procurement closer to real time, with a clearer consumer benefit case.

Currently if there is an inertia deficit the system operator typically issue offers to turn on synchronous generation and access their inertia via the Balancing Mechanism.

However, this often means adding extra power to the system at times when it may not be required.
