Latest figures from the Department for Transport show the number of zero emission vehicles registered in 2025 had also increased by 31.2% on the year before. Zero emission cars accounted for 23% of all new car registrations in 2025, compared to 19% in 2024.
Heidi Alexander, secretary of state for transport, said the Government’s Electric Gar Grant scheme had been key in reaching the record with more than 100,000 drivers benefitting from savings since it was introduced last summer.
Alexander said the Government was also investing £600m to deliver hundreds of thousands of additional chargers to support the increase in EVs. There are 119,000 already available, twice the number of petrol pumps.
