Speed, Trust, and the Human Touch: Rethinking the Digital Energy Marketplace
In this blog, Matt Stasium, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Sales at SmartestEnergy, shares key insights from the TEPA Philadelphia panel on the digital energy marketplace. As AI and real time data accelerate decision making, he highlights the importance of responsible innovation, strong data governance, and maintaining the human relationships that drive the industry forward. The article explores how balancing speed with trust and transparency will define success in an increasingly digital energy landscape.
At TEPA Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to join industry peers to discuss how technology is reshaping the energy marketplace. Much of the conversation focused on AI, digital platforms, and the increasing speed of transactions.
There is no question that the market is moving faster. Technology is enabling quicker decisions, more efficient processes, and greater access to real time data. But for me, the most important takeaway was this: speed only matters if it is built on trust.
Faster decisions, higher expectations
We are still at the beginning of understanding what AI can truly do for our industry. The potential is significant. It is helping us streamline operations, improve accuracy, and enhance the overall customer experience.
But as our capabilities grow, so do expectations.
Customers and partners are placing greater trust in how their data is used. As we use AI to drive smarter outcomes and reduce costs, there is a clear responsibility to ensure that data is handled ethically and that the value created is shared.
That might mean more competitive pricing, better insights, or a more seamless experience, but the benefit should extend beyond the supplier.
AI should support people, not replace them
One of the key themes I focused on during the panel is the role AI should play in our industry.
At SmartestEnergy, we do not see AI as a replacement for people. We see it as a tool that supports them, helping teams make better decisions, respond more quickly, and deliver stronger outcomes for customers.
In a relationship driven market like energy, that distinction matters.
Brokers and customers do not just need faster answers. They need confidence in those answers. They need to know there are experienced people behind the process who understand their business and are there to support them.
Protecting trust through responsible innovation
As AI becomes more embedded in how we operate, strong governance and clear protocols are essential.
Customers are trusting us with their data, and that trust must be protected. That means being transparent about how AI is used, ensuring it is applied responsibly, and maintaining high standards for data security and ethical use.
It also means recognizing that innovation comes with accountability. The way we use technology today will shape how much confidence customers and partners have in us tomorrow.
Balancing innovation with connection
The challenge and opportunity for our industry is finding the right balance.
Technology can enhance speed and improve decision making, but it should not come at the expense of the relationships that drive long term success.
At SmartestEnergy, that means combining advanced tools and global expertise with a local, service led approach. It is about ensuring that as the market becomes more digital, it also becomes more connected.
Looking ahead
The digital energy marketplace will continue to evolve, driven by AI, data, and innovation.
But success will not be defined by how quickly we adopt new tools. It will be defined by how responsibly we use them, how well we support our partners, and how effectively we maintain trust.
Because in a market that is moving faster than ever, trust remains the most important connection of all.
