Overview
Reporting to the Head of Origination in the Commercial Group, the principal role of the Origination Associate is to provide general support to the Origination team. A successful candidate with be a highly motivated and creative individual that is eager to develop their Origination skill set and to contribute to the success of the Origination team.
The Origination Associate is responsible for research and market analysis to identify new transaction ideas and customer connections, working with the Trading, Analytics, Risk, and other team on the evaluation of new Origination deals, transacting with counterparties on Mid-Marketing flow deals, and developing strategies to optimize the risk management of the existing Origination portfolio. These activities are in support of the growing Wholesale business with a particular focus on maximizing gross margin and effective risk management.
The wholesale commodities that SmartestEnergy US (SEUS) transacts include power, gas, RECs, and carbon certificates. The Origination group is responsible for generating gross margin by executing structured transactions with counterparties in the commodities and regional markets that we operate.
In this role, you will be involved with the following:
- Perform market research to identify new product ideas and customer opportunities.
- Expand Origination network with outreach to new prospective customers.
- Work collaboratively with the Analytics team to price and evaluate new Origination opportunities.
- Respond to executable pricing requests in support of Mid-Marketing deal flow.
- Monitor the Origination portfolio and work with Trading team to optimize and rebalance hedge positions.
- Develop presentation materials and other supporting documents for customer presentations and to support management approvals of new transactions.
- Utilize CRM to track Origination customer interactions and transaction pipeline
- Create materials to support new business strategies (ie. new market entry)
- Support the Origination team with ad-hoc tasks from time-to-time.
To be successful in this role, you are likely to have the following skills/experience:
- At least 2 years in commodity markets as an Origination, Trading, Structuring, or Risk analyst, or similar role.
- Bachelors degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field.
- Understanding of commodity markets and commonly traded products.
- Proficient in Excel and VBA.
- Strong analytics and problem-solving skills; ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to influence and build relationships as a participant in a team environment.
- Self-motivated and proactive; ability to work independently on multiple tasks/projects
- Ability to effectively communicate at all levels.
