Background on Net Metering:
Illinois statutes require electricity suppliers to provide net metering services to a limited number of Eligible Customers (defined below). Eligible Customer that approved by SmartestEnergy for this program will be billed for the net amount of energy used by the Approved Eligible Customer. The Approved Eligible Customer will receive a credit if it generates more energy than it consumes. A link to Illinois rules can be found at the Illinois General Assembly website.
Definition of Eligible Customer for Net Metering:
"Eligible customer" or "customer" means a retail customer that owns or operates a solar, wind, or other eligible renewable electrical generating facility with a rated capacity of not more than 2,000 kilowatts (kW) that is located on the customer's premises and is intended primarily to offset the customer's own electrical requirements.
SmartestEnergy Alternate Energy Retail Supplier license:
SmartestEnergy is not licensed to supply electricity to Illinois residential or “Small Commercial Retail Customers”. A "Small commercial retail customer" means a nonresidential customer of an electric utility consuming 15,000 kWh or less of electricity annually in its service area.
How to Apply:
- The local utility, Commonwealth Edison, must approve the interconnection of its system to your facility. Please contact your local utility to facilitate this approval.
- Fill out the Net Metering Application and return it to SmartestEnergy by email at [email protected] SmartestEnergy will review, and may approve, your application as required by Illinois rules.
