Electricity demand continues to rise faster than overall energy use, according to new data.
The latest Energy Institute review of world energy also found that clean power added more to global energy supplies than any other source in 2025.
The institute said electricity was seeing “growing prominence” in the global energy system, with electricity demand rising 3% in 2025 compared to the 1.7% rise seen in overall energy use.
Dr Nick Wayth, chief executive of the institute, said the figures showed the energy system was at a “tipping point”.
“We see encouraging substitution of fossil fuels in power, yet global emissions continue to rise and energy security pressures intensify. These findings underline the urgency of accelerating efficiency, electrification and investment in clean technologies worldwide.”
