Full benefits still to be unlocked from smart metering

The UK’s smart meter system is an under-utilised tool that could deliver much greater benefits, according to new research.
The report by LCP Delta for Calisen identified savings of up to £1.9bn a year through operational and system benefits.
They include better matching supply with demand which presents huge value when renewables such as wind are abundant.
Smart meter-enabled voltage control could also improve energy efficiency and grid resilience by providing visibility of voltage levels beyond substations.
Tom Veli, partner at LCP Delta, said although the smart meter rollout has been slower than hoped, it now presents significant opportunities at a time when energy bills are causing real pain.
“It is an under-utilised piece of grid infrastructure, and now is the time to flip the switch from reactive to proactive.”
