Beyond the Sale: Building Better Energy Partnerships Through Communication, Accountability, and Customer Experience
What happens after an energy contract is signed? Matt Stasium reflects on his TEPA Chicago panel discussion and explores how suppliers and brokers can work together to deliver a stronger customer experience.
At TEPA Chicago, I joined fellow industry leaders for a discussion on a topic that continues to shape the future of our industry: what happens after the contract is signed.
In many ways, the sale is only the beginning. Customers expect far more than competitive pricing and contract execution. They expect responsive service, clear communication, reliable support, and trusted partners who can help them navigate challenges throughout their energy strategy. As our panel discussed, the true measure of a partnership is not how business is won, but how value is delivered after the sale.
Communication Builds Confidence
Throughout the discussion, communication emerged as one of the most important elements of a successful broker-supplier relationship.
Whether addressing a billing question, an enrollment issue, or another operational challenge, customers want to know that progress is being made and that the teams supporting them are engaged. One point I shared during the panel is that silence can quickly create frustration and uncertainty. Even when a solution is not immediate, timely updates and clear communication help maintain trust and keep everyone aligned.
Effective communication extends beyond issue resolution. It starts with setting clear expectations, establishing responsibilities, and ensuring that brokers, suppliers, and customers understand how information will be shared throughout the relationship. When those foundations are in place, navigating challenges becomes much easier.
At SmartestEnergy, we see the impact of this approach reflected in feedback from our customers and broker partners. Our customer Net Promoter Score recently reached +54, demonstrating the value they place on responsive communication, transparency, and ongoing support throughout the partnership lifecycle.
As one survey respondent shared: “SmartestEnergy deserves a 10 because they’re always fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to work with. Their pricing turnaround is quick, their communication is clear and consistent, and they always make the process smooth. Their service truly stands out.”
Accountability Starts Early
Strong partnerships are built long before a problem arises.
A recurring theme during the panel was the importance of establishing expectations from the outset. Brokers and suppliers both benefit when there is a shared understanding of objectives, service expectations, communication preferences, and customer needs. Many of the misunderstandings that occur later in a relationship can be avoided through proactive conversations early in the process.
We also discussed the value of ongoing business reviews and data-driven conversations. Accountability is most effective when performance can be measured, discussed openly, and continuously improved. These conversations create opportunities to strengthen relationships and identify ways to enhance the customer experience.
Customer experience is a shared responsibility
One of the most encouraging aspects of the discussion was how much the industry has evolved.
Years ago, suppliers and brokers often operated more independently. Today, there is broad recognition that delivering a positive customer experience requires collaboration across the entire value chain. Brokers, suppliers, consultants, and service providers each play an important role in supporting customers and helping them achieve their goals.
This collaborative approach becomes especially important when challenges occur. Customers are rarely concerned with which organization owns a specific process. They simply want answers, solutions, and support. When partners work together, communicate effectively, and remain focused on customer outcomes, everyone benefits.
Technology should strengthen relationships
The conversation naturally turned to technology, artificial intelligence, and the growing role of data in the energy industry.
The consensus among panelists was that technology delivers the greatest value when it helps people work more efficiently and improve the customer experience. Automation, enhanced reporting, and greater access to information can reduce administrative burdens and create more time for meaningful customer interactions.
At the same time, our industry remains fundamentally relationship driven. Customers still rely on trusted advisors to help them evaluate options, understand risk, and make informed decisions. Technology should enhance those relationships by improving responsiveness and visibility, not replace them.
Looking ahead, there is significant opportunity to use data and predictive capabilities to identify potential issues before they impact customers, streamline operations, and make it easier for suppliers and brokers to work together. The organizations that successfully balance innovation with strong customer relationships will be best positioned for long-term success.
Looking ahead
As our discussion concluded, the conversation returned to a common goal: creating a seamless customer experience.
Customers should not have to navigate multiple organizations or wonder where responsibility begins and ends. They want trusted partners who communicate clearly, solve problems efficiently, and work together on their behalf. The more aligned brokers and suppliers become, the easier it is to deliver the level of service customers expect.
The energy industry will continue to evolve through changing market conditions, new technologies, and shifting customer expectations. What should not change is our commitment to collaboration, accountability, and customer success. The discussion at TEPA Chicago reinforced that lasting partnerships are built through trust, communication, and a shared focus on delivering value well beyond the sale.
